Veterans Day
With today being Veterans Day here in the US, I wanted to share this heart warming story of Edith Shain. She was a nurse working at Doctor’s Hospital in New York who happened to be passing through Times Square on August 14, 1945. Everyone was excited to hear the War had ended.
A Sailor who had been drinking most of the day ran into the streets grabbing and kissing every woman he passed. Photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt caught him kissing a woman dressed in her white nurses’ uniform, and history was made.
Years later, Alfred publicly asked for the identities of the couple in his photograph. Only two women came forth. Eisenstaedt’s claim was that Edith was the girl in Times Square on Victory Day in 1945. He recognized that same patriotic spark he had seen while taking the picture of the couple kissing.
Today, the photo of V-J Day in Times Square is famous, and Alfred Eisenstaedt is one of the world’s greatest photographers in history.
At 90 years of age, today, Edith will serve as Grand Marshall in New York City for the Veterans Day Parade. The picture to the left is of Edith at the Washington D.C. 2008 Memorial Day Parade.

Heartfelt Politics
Gloria Feldt: her blog Speaking Up features a wonderful article about Sarah Palin’s new clothes. It is strongly direct and a humorous article of Sarah Palin’s endeavors as Republican nominee for Vice Presidency and the aftermath. I enjoyed this immensely.

I cant stress this enough but people really have to get on top of their kids’ eating habits. This story focuses on the problems with fast food in the USA.
This article, Secrets of an American Junk Food Industry, is a powerful read.

Last but not least I wanted share this beautiful quote with you. The much loved philanthropist and comedian Danny Thomas, who is also the founder of St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital, said to his daughter, Marlo Thomas:
I raised you to be a thoroughbred. When thoroughbreds run, they wear blinders to keep their eyes focused straight ahead with no distractions, no other horses. They hear the crowd, but they don’t listen. They just run their own race. That’s what you have to do. Don’t listen to anyone comparing you to me or to anyone else. You just run your own race.
- Danny Thomas, to his aspiring actress daughter, Marlo, at 17 years of age
