In my ongoing quest of finding only the best natural fruit shake recipes for us health oriented business women, I have a good one for you today. I’ll show you how to make a smoothie of grapefruit and pineapple. I’ve already shared my mango fruit shake, my blueberriy homemade yogurt recipe, and my natural pineapple fruit shake recipe with you (you can find the links to these recipes at the end this post).

Today, I’m going to show you two delicious grapefruit recipes - one being a grapefruit/pineapple smoothie, the other the world-renowned original Hemingway Daiquiri. For those of you who are on a Gapefruit juice diet, this will be very interesting!

The Grapefruit…

…is a bitter tasting fruit but is very refreshing. Its sour taste can be sweetened by mixing it with other fruits or with a bit of sugar. You can buy either white or pink grapefruits - I think the pink ones are more tasty and sweeter. Many use it when dieting (like a grapefruit diet or even a grapefruit juice diet) because of its next to zero calories and the benefits of the citrus as an alkalizing fruit. Which means it helps to rid the body of extra water. But there is some commotion about it having an effect on medication, by either strengthening or decreasing its value. This is mainly with high blood pressure medications and antibiotics. So like with everything, moderation is best used with grapefruits as well, no matter of you’re on a grapefruit diet or not.

How To Make A Smoothie With Grapefruit & Pineapple

Now this is pretty simple. All you have to do is put everything into a blender and push “mix”.

This makes two servings:

  • 1 1/2 cups grapefruit juice
  • 3/4 cup of sliced pineapple
  • 1/4 cup of pineapple juice
  • 1 cup plain low-fat yogurt
  • 2 cups ice

Grapefruits Are Not Only Good For Diets!

When I think of grapefruit, I seriously have to tell you who comes to mind. One of my favorite writers and a man who lead an incredible life, even dealing with depression and alcoholism. It’s the great Ernest Hemingway, who created the Hemingway Daiquiri (among great novels). Although his life was so complex, he was adventurous and a man to be admired. Here’s to you Ernest. Cheers.

Ernest Hemingway had a favorite French expression. He had moved to Paris in 1921, working for the Toronto Sun. He often wrote this when autographing his books:

“il faut d’abord durer”

…which means “first one must last”.

Ernest Hemingway: A Short Biography

Hemingway was a renowned world traveler, who once toyed with the idea of becoming a bull fighter on one of his visits to Spain. He was the Pulitzer Prize winner in 1953 for Old Man and the Sea, one of my favorites. He also won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. He wrote such wonderful novels as Farewell To Arms and For Whom The Bell Tolls.

Hemingway was born in a suburb of Chicago in 1899. Instead of going to college, he went directly into journalism, then volunteered in WW1 with an Italian ambulance unit and was awarded two medals by the Italian government.

Tragically, this wonderful author and journalist met a tragic ending in 1961. After years of suffering from manic depression and alcoholism, he took his own life. And this wasn’t the first attempt. His illness had haunted him over the years, and many of his books are said to be based on his own life experiences. At the age of 61, and the being depressed over having lost much of his memory, he took his own life. Many doctors at the time expected his memory to be lost from the electroshock therapy he often received when hospitalized for his depression, or for previous suicide attempts. While reading Hemingway’s biography, I have to wonder if the significant factor diabetes could have played into his depression and memory loss - this seems to be a generic factor. Also, due to his age, there is no mention of any Alzheimer’s disease; and I could not find any facts to support that, only his dementia and a family history of diabetes and depression.

The Story Behind The Hemingway Daiquiri

Actually, the real name of the Hemingway Daiquiri is “Papa Doble”. Supposedly, Ernest Hemingway invented the drink to his own taste. When someone would visit him in Havana, Cuba, Ernest would take them to a popular bar called Floridita to have his creation. On the menu at that time was the E. Hemingway Special - altered though. A true daiquiri to Mr. Hemingway’s liking consisted of two and a half jiggers of Bacardi White Label Rum, the juice of two limes, half a grapefruit and six drops of Maraschino liqueur. Now I have a craving for the Hemingway daiquiri and some coconut shrimp.

Hemingway Daiquiri

  • 1 1/2 oz light rum
  • 1/4 oz Maraschino liqueur
  • 3/4 oz lime juice
  • 1/4 oz grapefruit juice

Shake the ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

This is how to make a Hemingway Daiquiri. As you can see, it uses organic grapefruit juice, which is why I thought it fits with our grapefruit recipe above perfectly. If you are on a grapefruit juice diet, you can still make this (although alcohol contains calories, I know). Just don’t have it every day.
